A Psychiatrist Writes

This initial example of writing as a psychiatrist is merely designed as an introduction.

The first thought I have is to address the strange incompatibility of Obama and Wright, their representing two poles of the African American population. The former aspires to integrating in full the diverse country of The United States, eschewing the devisive forces that led to slavery and succession The latter insists on reminding all of the pain suffered and the near impossibility of reconciliation between whites and blacks. Asking Wright to restrain for the purposes of electing the first African American president seems, by the voice of many blacks, equivalent to asking slave owners join them in brotherly affection. The past, for Wright, is the present. For Obama, the past is a springboard to the future. Whether Obama can use his new presidential power to govern for all the peopole and put aside the racial devide remains a theoretical question that may not be answered. Wright seems to not want this to happen and would prefer his bully-pulpet than to be a part of a new coalition. No one can forsee how the American electorate will respond. Past and future are in severe conflict. The spoils may go to the outsider who has not declared himself--McCaine.
